Finca los Almendrillos
Finca Los Almendrillos is a haven of peace, perched on a hill just outside Gaucin. The slightly Gaudiesque design is enchanting, the views from its terraces and from the pool are divine. Finca Los Almendrillos is a very private retreat. Its location in the Gaucin area gives ample opportunity to explore the many interesting cultural sites and famous Natural Parks in the area. A great place to relax and enjoy the wonderful countryside.
2-8 persons
From the rugged north, with the dramatic mountains directly behind, Finca Los Almendrillos reminds you of a Moorish castle with three towers and a high wall. There is something slightly Gaudiesque about the house. |
| The design of Finca Los Almendrillos echoes the soft curves of the hills of the Serrania. The house naturally blends with the wonderful surrounding landscape. The living room and the dining room, the terraces and the bedrooms all overlook the sloping hills towards the Mediterranean Sea to the south. |
| The property has many terraces, some sunny and some shaded. Lovely spots for either an al fresco dinner or a long lazy siesta. There are lots of places to occasionally get away from the other guests. |
The garden around the house is planted largely with indigenous species which include Mediterranean shrubs and flowering plants, olive, almond and fig trees, fragrant lavender and rosemary and the more architectural shapes of agave and aloe. |
| Through the main entrance you arrive in the hall. From there a door leads one way to the kitchen, the living room is ahead, and the bedrooms are the other way. Winding stairs lead up to the second floor and below the stairs is the cloakroom. The design is one of clean uncluttered lines, white walls and polished concrete floors, with lots of light and space and all corners softly rounded. |
| The living room has comfortable couches and a welcoming open fire. There are fine Turkish carpets on the floor and a Greek cloth on the wall. Underfloor heating ensures a comfortable stay whole year round. It has satellite TV, DVD and WI-FI. |
The dining table with antique olive wood chairs seats eight. This is a great place to dine on an occasionally colder evening. |
| Most evenings you will dine al fresco at the terrace, enjoying the amazing views. You will be amazed by lovely details like the stone tables on the terrace. These were hewn by hand from the nearby stone quarries at Casares. The stone is biscuit coloured sandstone with a most attractive natural grey inlay, left in its own natural shape and colours. Being immensely heavy it needed 10 men to lift the big table into place. |
| Going around the terraces you will find two Mosaics. One on the wall of the Casita is “ In memory of Captain Charles Coke, Sailor, Bold Traveller and Painter”, who gave the land to the current owners. The second mosaic, which incorporates a fountain, is a copy of a Sea Horse from an original mosaic at Pompeii. |
| From the front terrace stairs lead down to a romantic pool area. There is both a shaded area and a sun terrace with sun loungers. The view goes all the way to the Mediterranean and the Riff mountains beyond. |
| Bathrooms, stairs, the entrance and kitchen are located in the fortified towers to the north. The well equipped kitchen has a double oven, gas hob, and electric charcoal grill. Furthermore a big American fridge-freezer-icemaker, and dishwashing machine. There is lovely white pottery, all hand made by Ramon of Ronda. The next door laundry room has a washing machine and iron and board. |
| Downstairs are two large double bedrooms and bathrooms. The master bedroom at the far end has an en-suite bathroom with large bath and walk-in shower, and it has a dressing room. Doors open to the front terrace. |
| The owners have brought many art and artefacts from their travels all over the world. There are batiks from Sri Lanka and a cotton bedcover with appliquéd geometric pattern from Indian designer Warris Vianni in London. The triangle poufs are day beds that the owners have brought from Thailand. They stretch out and are very comfortable to lie on. |
The second double bedroom has a large wardrobe and the bathroom with large walk-in shower is across the corridor. |
| Stairs lead up from the hall to a gallery. You first come to an office with a sofa bed on the upper mezzanine. Further down the first floor passage is the third double bedroom of the main house with its own bathroom. All is bright and airy and blends perfectly together. |
| To the right of the main house, connected by a walled patio, is the Casita. The authentic Casita has recently been totally renovated in exactly the same wonderful style as the main house. |
| It has a cosy living area with a chimney and a terrace with the same divine views as the main house. It has full central heating. There is a mezzanine level with a single bed for occasional use. The chimney breast divides the kitchen and dining area from the living area. The kitchen is fully fitted with gas rings, and electric oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and a washing machine. The Casita offers two double bedrooms, one with a bathroom and one with a showerroom. |
